I've been talking with various people, including longstanding ClickHOST customers, about the allure of a free domain name with a hosting order.

The consensus was that in today's economic climate (real or perceived), value-added items are king.

A number of web hosting companies who offer up free domain names have rigid set-up fees that basically cover the cost of the domain name registrations and then some.

As a web host, and a fairly savvy consumer, it drives me nuts because I know that those customers would be paying for their domain name anyway via the set-up fee, even though it says its free.

However, the issue for web hosting companies is that domain name registrations can easily turn into money lost if the customer is a scammer and has used a bogus credit card and the order gets charged back. Sure it's not a lot of money, but getting stuck with a bunch of crappy domain names that were registered with your own money by a bunch of turds is no fun. Who likes wasting or losing money?

This all said, we know that most of you customers are just like us. Honest folk trying to make a decent living, so why punish everyone for the sins of the few, right?

What are your thoughts?

ClickHOST now offers a FREE .COM, .NET, .ORG or even a .CA domain name with every new BETTER or BEST hosting plan ordered.

i really doubt the efficacy of free hosting services, i have 3 of my sites hosted with http://www.tucktail.com/ which gives hosting services for less than 2$
