Our world has forever changed due to social media. The exchange of news or ideas used to take days, even weeks to share. Now we can have all the information we ever wanted in an instant.
We can learn about large earthquakes in San Francisco as it’s happening. We can hear about how a company brand has done something wonderful or horrible in seconds. We can even watch a live jump from the edge of space with our phone, when it seemed impossible to broadcast from the moon over four decades ago. We are connected in ways some of us would have never dreamed possible in our lifetime. It’s amazing and crazy at the same time!
While there are good and bad sides of social media, one thing is for sure: social media is here to stay and it will always impact how we interact with the world around us — especially when it comes to business.
Why Social Media is Important for Your Business
Your customers or clients are online. They are engaging with family, friends, and followers on a daily basis. They share their lives and their experiences in real time. Once they’ve expressed their views or opinions online, their digital thoughts are almost impossible to erase. Digital footprints can last forever.
Knowing that your audience is continually talking online is important. Social media forces you to consider every aspect of your brand experience and how to deliver on your brand’s promises. It changes (or should) the way you interact with your customers on an ongoing basis, as long as you are in business. When a customer appreciates what you have done, they may tell a few people. When you do something bad, they are going to tell everyone.
How Social Media Can Affect Your Business
Social media can be a double edged sword for your company. As you can see above, these tools can have a direct impact on your business. Social media can be used to build your brand or it can also be used to tear it apart. This is why it’s critical for you to be involved with social media as a business. It’s not so much about telling people about what you sell or offer, but that you can listen to what people think about your brand.
Social media is valuable for your business because you can engage in honest conversations with customers or clients. You can learn about what you’re doing right or what you’re doing wrong. You can get vital information on how to improve your products or services. And you can discover new potential markets or ideas that generate profits. Listening online and participating in these social conversations can make a dramatic impact on the sustainability of your company.
